Cristiano Ronaldo vs Homer Simpson

If there were playoffs for best commercial ads, Nike would definitely be vying for the championship. The World Cup begins next month, as does the trash-talking  of the many soccer bandwagon fans.

Nike’s latest approach comes with a “Write The Future” tagline, with the related commercial featuring soccer superstars Didier Drogba of Chelsea, Wayne Rooney of Manchester United, and Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid.

As usual Nike comes through in providing brilliant eye candy that will most likely leave your jaw dropped. The best part may only be a miniscule addition, but the comedic relief comes in the form of Ronaldo surprising Homer Simpson at the 2:20 mark.

Nowadays it’s hard to come up with an original commercial, especially for shoes. But Nike went for a different approach with their latest viral ad, and they nailed it.

The use of actor David Koechner won me over from the very beginning, although any member from the cast of “Anchorman” or “The Office” would have done the trick. If the name doesn’t ring a bell you should recognize him instantly, as he always seems to be lurking in all the funny movies.

Troy Polamalu, Brandon Roy, Carl Lewis, and Maria Sharapova are some of the athletes used in the video. Polamalu’s been on a roll with the commercials lately, from Coke Zero to Head & Shoulders and now Nike. I guess he took some advice from Shaq that you can get mentioned on internet blogs if you appear in viral videos while injured.

Gotta love John McEnroe at the end.

Oregon men’s basketball is on a search for a new head coach after firing Ernie Kent. The Ducks finished 16-16 on the season and 7-11  in conference play, in a year where the Pac-10 conference was notably weak.

Phil Knight, an Oregon booster and more importantly the CEO of Nike, already has a coach in mind. To say Knight has input on the situation would be an understatement, since it will be Knight who helps cash out the new coach’s paycheck. And according to Forbes.com Knight is #73 on the list of the world’s richest men, which leads one to believe that yes, the wallet will come out in a generous fashion.

According to OregonLive.com, the top four choices for the job are Gonzaga’s Mark Few, Texas A&M’s Mark Turgeon, Pittsburgh’s Jamie Dixon, and Florida’s Billy Donovan.

You’ll notice that Tubby Smith is not on that list, meaning the University of Oregon athletic department will face a tough decision on whether or not to go ahead and pick their guy, which could mean alienating Knight, or letting one of the richest men in the world call the shots.

It’s definitely a possibility that all four of those candidates will reject the offer, leaving a major drop-off in available big name coaches. The Ducks hope to make the hire, whoever it may be, by April 3-5.
